C-Prio: Pioneering an Advanced Ai Tool for Cancer Diagnosis and Drug Discovery
Introduction
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Its early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and improved survival rates. However, this is impaired by backlog and shortage of histopathologists (the study of changes in tissues caused by disease) globally, especially in NHS.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers a transformative solution.
The Red Trouser Day charity has recently been in talks with a startup company called C-Prio who are developing an AI tool for early and accurate diagnosis of CRC called rAI-colon. It promises cutting-edge advantages over the market leaders including:
- Simulation study showed 66% increase of reporting speed of histopathologists
- High training efficiency, less than 40 cases for training
- High accuracy, 99%
- Give underline reasons for diagnosis
- Alert for unknown and borderline features.
How we are helping C-Prio bring their AI technology to market
To bring a new medical product to market isn’t easy; there are many steps involved to prove the technology, to get to clinical trials and get regulatory approval for deployment into the NHS and further afield. As you can imagine this takes a significant amount of time & effort, as well as financing along the journey.
To enter NHS market, C-Prio needs to complete six milestones, these are:
- proof of concept
- prototype
- preclinical validation
- clinical trial
- permission for sales
- post-sales surveillance
They have already successfully completed stages 1 & 2. Our trustees have approved a tranche of funding to enable them to proceed on stage 3, preclinical validation.
This not only allows for progress of the whole product development but also means that the partner hospitals and the patients will start to get benefits from this product. C-Prio will collaborate with the East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust (ESNEFT).

Conclusion
As an organisation the RTD whole-heartedly supports C-Prio and the talented & dedicated team who aim to make a real impact into the diagnosis and treatment of Colorectal Cancer.
With time, it is entirely possible that the benefits of the RTD funding will result in:
- increasing reporting speed by 66% or more
- reducing backlog
- avoiding delayed cancer diagnosis
- reducing outsourcing cost and staff stress.
