We will be hearing from one of the clinicians that have been awarded funds from Red Trouser Day in 2024 for the Andromeda Study, a feasibility study in dose escalated treatment in rectal cancer on Mr-Linac using MRI guided adaptive radiotherapy.
ANDROMEDA aims to increase the proportion of patients who achieve complete treatment response by increasing the dose of radiotherapy delivered to rectal tumours, through an MRI integrated radiotherapy machine (MR-Linac), so allowing radiotherapy to be tailored to the patient and replanned according to the anatomy of the day. Treatment volume can also be reduced because MRI scans demonstrate tumour clearer, allowing for certainty of the treatment target whilst reducing normal tissue involved in the area, so improving the probability of Organ Preservation. During treatment, the tumour volume can shrink, also allowing for the delivery of increased radiotherapy to the remaining tumour seen (shrinking boost) in order to reduce normal tissue toxicity, when escalating the radiotherapy dose.”
